1- Whats your real name and derby name?

Heather Alva / Kam N. GetIt

2 - How long have you been involved with Skating?

I've skated all my life. I've been playing Roller Derby since August 2008 and will continue until my body tells me otherwise.

3 - How did you become involved with Roller Derby?

A friend asked me to join with her and I've been hooked ever since!

4 - What teams are you skating with?

The Camel City Thrashers

5 - Flat Track or Banked?

Flat Track - although I would LOVE to try out a banked track!

6 - If you had to chose between taking a killer rock block or loosing a toe stop mid-jam?

Hmmmm, I guess the killer block. I use my toe stops a lot for transitions and backwards blocking and I'd most likely fall face-first if I didn't have them.

7 - Whats the best part about Roller Derby?

What isn't the best part of Roller Derby? You get to skate, meet new people, travel, gain a whole new AMAZING family, get funky bruises, and play this amazing sport where no matter how "different" you are - you will fit in!

8 - Chocolate or Vanilla?

Swirl?

9 - Whats the best hit you have given?

We were playing a home bout and I hit this very tiny jammer and she went flying out of bounds and the crowd went crazy!! I had so many fans come up to me after and tell me how "epic" that hit was!

10 - Worst injury?

Hmmm, breaking my tailbone. It still hurts to this day and it happened in 2011!

11 - Gear specs? The Variety pack of Roller Derby: Crazy Skates DBX5 boot Venus Plate Atom Jukes Super Reds Bearings Smith Scabs Psycho Knee Pads Smith Scabs Gaskets ProDesign Elbow Pads Atom Wrist Guards Sisu Mouth Guard Triple8 Helmet

The Derby Dozen By Smith Episode #7

The Derby Dozen, 12 questions 1 person a whole lot of information passed along to the rest of us.

1- Whats your real name and derby name?
Krista Young aka Lil Shanksta

2 - How long have you been involved with Skating?
Going on 3 years now.

3 - How did you become involved with Roller Derby?
I had a friend on the west coast who got into it. She thought it was something I would enjoy and told me to look into it. I knew from the moment I saw it, that it was something I wanted to do.

4 - What teams are you skating with?
I am head coach and also a skater for the Wicked City Derby Damez

5 - Flat Track or Banked?
Flat track for now, but my league has plans for the future to be a banked track league. I do love the banked track. We are pretty close to Austin TX and I have to say I have enjoyed every minute I have been lucky enough to spend with my wheels on the banked track.

6 -If you had to chose, taking a killer rock block or loosing a toe stop mid-jam?
I would rather take the hit. My recovery time is pretty quick and I spend a lot of time on my toes so I'm going to need those stops! .

7 - Whats the best part about Roller Derby?
Ha! I couldn't choose if I wanted. For me it's a toss up between the bonds you make, the physicality of the game and the emotion that stems from that, and the sense of pride and confidence I have seen it give people.

8 - Chocolate or Vanilla?
Chocolate!!!!

9 - Whats the best hit you have given?
I remember one game I was blocking a much larger opponent I turned around and stuck a mean pivot block to her. I don't know if it was really hard or I caught her off guard but her face went form normal concentrated skating face to "hulk" mad, crazy face and she let out this terrible noise. It was hilarious.

10 - Worst injury?
I'm lucky enough to say that my worst injury was a large separation in my shoulder.

11 - Gear specs?
187's, Scabs, and bonts.

12 - Where do you shop for all your gear?
Medusa skate in Austin TX. and Switchblade skate co, in Oklahoma city. switchbladeskate.com

Angelena DeLucia / Vonda Kut-A-Vitch

2 - How long have you been involved with Skating?

Roller Derby about 5 years now.

4 - What teams are you skating with?

Shasta Roller Derby Assassins is my home league

5 - Flat Track or Banked?

I play Flat track, but Banked is SO fun!

6 - If you had to chose, taking a killer rock block or loosing a toe stop mid-jam?

I’ll say loosing a toe stop because I dunno what “killer rock block” means hahaha

7 - Whats the best part about Roller Derby?

That’s a tough question. For me its all of it is amazing!

8 - Chocolate or Vanilla? Vanilla- What why Choose?!?

I guess Vanilla because you can make it chocolate.

9 - Whats the best hit you have given?

I’m not such a strong hitter, usually more positional blocker. I have heard it hurts when I get good hip checks in- they blame my boney hips.

Worst injury I have had (and I’m way lucky) is a separated AC joint.

11 - Gear specs?

I skate on Riedell 495’s with revenge plates, atom or rollerbone wheels, Smith leopard knee pads (with Gaskets), poor joy wrist guards, 187 Elbow and Triple 8 or S1 of helmet.

Online. Nothing local boo! Cruz Skate Shop or Wicked Skate shop are usually what I go to first.

The Derby Dozen by Smith Episode #5

The Derby Dozen, 12 questions 1 person a whole lot of information passed along to the rest of us.

1 - What’s your real name and derby name?
    •    Real name:  Lyssa Sharick
    •    Derby Name: Revelation #4-9
2 - How long have you been involved with Skating?
    •    I have been skating since as long as I can remember.  I actually don’t recall the first time I put skates on.  When I would get home from school I would strap on my quads and go trail skating with my friends being the uncool one that didn’t have roller blades.
3 - How did you become involved with Roller Derby?
    •    About 11 years ago I was visiting a friend and she was talking about being freshmeat while she was practicing falls. I made her tell me all about it and was hooked.  At the time I was getting married and starting a family so I wasn’t able to start right away, but after a hiatus it encouraged me to pull my skates out and start playing around in them a little bit again.
4 - What teams are you skating with?
    •    Wicked City Derby Damez is my league and Daughters of Darknezz is my home team. We are a newer league but have grown and developed in leaps and bounds.  We are even set to be hosting MADE nationals for 2014!
5 - Flat Track or Banked?
    •    We skate flat track.  We have banked track plans for the future though, so just you wait!
6 - If you had to chose, taking a killer rock block or losing a toe stop mid-jam?
    •    I’ll take a Killer Rock Block!  I cry a little inside every time I have to jam!  Jamming is so complicated and exhausting for me as is, I couldn’t imagine throwing a toe stop off in the middle of it.
7 - What’s the best part about Roller Derby?
    •    Everything! Seriously though the camaraderie and the fitness.  I love the sisterhood we all share and I love being in shape so it’s all a win.  The physical aspect is always a challenge because we can always improve.  I love that.
 8 - Chocolate or Vanilla?
    •    Mint!
9 - What’s the best hit you have given?
    •    My favorite memory of a hit would be the first time I went against one of our vets and was actually able to hold my ground.  She tried to hit me out and I countered her and pushed against her back to the middle. It was certainly a victory moment for me! I hope I always remember it because I think it is important, especially as a Freshmeat coach.  It’s good to remember where we started.
 10 - Worst injury?
    •    I have managed to not get injured yet!  …but now that this has been written I am probably doomed….  So far it’s been the usual rink rash and bruises. I’ve had a few minor sprains.  My knee cap is bruised which is proving incredibly annoying, but so far nothing that would take me off my skates.
  11 - Gear specs?
    •    Oh man, it’s quite a compilation of goodness. I skate Riedell She Devils with Powerdyne Triton plates.  For our cement floors (and the skate parks) I use Zombies Low Profile 89a but switch to Poisons Low Profile 84 for outdoor.  My helmet is the Triple 8 Brainsaver (dual certified).  Right now my elbows are the 187 but I think I am going to try the Smith Scabs next.  I had originally choose the 187 because they are smaller and less bulky, but from what I hear the Scabs stay put better.  We shall see!  My wrist guards are the Triple 8 Roller Derby guards.  My knees are protected by the Smith Scabs Elite.
12 - Where do you shop for all your gear?
    •    Derby Warehouse ~ They were so amazing when I went in with a million questions and not knowing anything about anything.  They were patient and probably drug out every possible different type and brand of gear you could think of so I could try it on and mess with it.  Though they are in California and I am in Texas I still use their website.  The only time I order elsewhere is the off chance they don’t have what I am looking for.  I pretty much love them.

The Derby Dozen by Smith episode #4

The Derby Dozen, 12 questions 1 person a whole lot of information passed along to the rest of us.

1- Whats your real name and derby name? Janet Dominy aka Jan Wicked

2- How long have you been involved with Skating? I started skating when I was 7 after my parents split up. My mom used the rink hours to study while in college and I was there every time the rink was opened. I did speed team and we had a pretty competitive roller limbo team. I had gotten down to clearing an 8 inch bar. One of the other girls on our team held the World Record for passing under a bar at 5 inches.

3- How did you become involved with Roller Derby? Roller Derby was something that we watched on TV at the rink on Saturday nights. The 1980's televised derby on Bank track and I think there was an alligator pit...anyway. A group of girls attempted a start up of a derby league but with no experience it fell apart quickly. A new league formed up with some of the serious skaters from the first league. I joined right as the rink opened back up in July and I have been rolling hard ever since

4- What teams are you skating with? Currently I skate with the South Coast Derby Dolls in Brunswick Georgia. I love my girls. We skate with lots of other teams in scrimmage. Our family stretches the southeast coast.

5- Flat Track or Banked? Flat Track. Our Captain Shematoma used to skate Bank Track in Texas with TXRD. It looks like fun.

6- If you had to chose, taking a killer rock block or loosing a toe stop mid-jam? Killer Rock Blocks are my life. I am a blocker...that's what I do. I give hard hits and I take hard hits. Jamming is hard enough for me without loosing a toe stop. That's the stuff my nightmares revolve around.

7- Whats the best part about Roller Derby? For me the best part about Roller Derby has been getting back on 8 wheels and being good at something. I enjoy the feeling of learning a new skill or that look from your team mate when you know you got something and they know you got it. It's like you don't even have to say anything. Feels amazing

8- Chocolate or Vanilla? Why or why can't we just have both?

9- Whats the best hit you have given? Last bout of the season. Had a girl get away with a back block that landed me square on my butt. The refs didn't call it so I just threw myself anger and all at the jammer who backblocked me and knocked her of the track. Amazing feeling.

10- Worst injury? Bruised Rib Meats. Took forever to heal and hurt forever. Reinjured it a few times too. Im better now...never again.

11- Gear specs? Currently I am a mix of great gear and gear that needs help. Im pretty much a broke skater. I wish I could share my shopping list but for the sake of the question. I skate on Labeda Mombo Pro skates size 5. I have Fugative wheels for indoor and Radar Flat Outs for outdoor. I have TSG Knees, Triple 8 Wrists, and (so embarassing) Bell Elbows but I am currently saving for Smith Psychos I love the way they look and how they are longer as right now im rockin a permanent bruise on my forarm I also use RX Toe Stops

12- Where do you shop for all your gear? I get my gear from different places...where I can get the best price for the things I want.
